Company Background

MAEKO provides an on-site food waste composting technology which can turn food waste within 12-24 hours, into nutrient rich resource called compost that can then be used as soil enhancer for farming and planting that ultimately generate food for consumption. This business solution is a closed loop alternative comparable to the non-sustainable a linear economy method of landfilling. The scalability of the technology allows any food waste generators to responsibly settle their food waste at source generating resourceful output, save on disposal fee and contributing to effort in combating global warming.

Global food waste generates annually 4.4 GtCO2e, (about 8% of total anthropogenic GHG emissions) where its contribution to global warming is almost equivalent (87%) to global road transport emissions. By adopting MAEKO’s on-site food waste valorisation solution which reduces GHG by 66% ( Life Cycle Inventory Analysis), the linear food waste management concept is shifting to a circular economy one which is hygienic, cost saving and contributes towards environment conservation. MAEKO’s technology is a needed cleantech to resolve the ever-increasing food waste due to rapid population growth where management waste is a key challenge of most countries.

MAEKO’s innovation supports the UN Sustainability Development Goal as below :

(A) MAEKO’s food waste technology in composting machine fits in:

SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities

(By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities on waste management)

MAEKO composting technology provides on-site food waste management solution to resolve the urban food waste issue creating sustainable cities and communities.

SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production

(By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse)

MAEKO composting technology valorised and recycle food waste into nutrient-rich compost which can be reused as soil enhancer for the earth.

SDG 13- Climate action

(political will and a wide array of technological measures, to limit the increase in global mean temperature)

MAEKO’s aerobic composting technology helps in reduction green house gas (GHG) generates by food waste up to 66% compares to landfilling. This greatly suppresses the global warming effect caused by food waste rotting in landfills.

(B) The end product generated after food waste valorisation from MAEKO composting machine, compost, helps in SDGs below:

SDG 2- Zero Hunger

(By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices by improving land and soil quality)

MAEKO food waste composting process is compost, a nutrient rich soil enhancer to used for urban farming, organic farming replacing chemical fertilizer so as to produce safe and organic food supply for communities.

SDG 14 – Life below Water

(14.2.1 Sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts by 2020)

MAEKO on-site composting technology helps to handle food waste hygienically to avoid irresponsible dumping of food waste into water system or directly into the sea leading to marine pollution which results in adverse effect on marine life.

SDG 15- Life on Land

(By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, to achieve a land degradation-neutral world.)

The compost generated after valorization of food waste in MAEKO composting machine can be used to restore and revive degraded land and soil by providing nutrients, rich organic matter and beneficial microbes to help in land restoration.
