Introduction of an EPR System – What can companies contribute?
A knowledge exchange between Jordan, Egypt and Malaysia.
Objectives :
- Exchange of experiences in the introduction of EPR-systems in Egypt, Jordan and Malaysia.
- Private companies get to know various approaches in those countries.
- Exchange of best practice and lessons learned in pilot projects (peer exchange).
Agenda :
MAREA’s Chairman, Mr Juan Aranols has been invited to share MAREA’s formation journey in Malaysia. He mentioned that the idea was mooted in 2019 where 10 x companies (Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, Dutch Lady, Etika, F&N, Mondelez, Nestle, Spritzer, Tetra Pak and Unilever) came together to start the first EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) Organisation for the FMCG sector covering PET, HDPE, UBC and Flexible. They then engage GA Circular to provide the report for the EPR implementation in Malaysia. In 2020, they had started the hiring process for the General Manager and incorporation of MAREA which was setup on 4 Jan 2021. The GM, Pauline Goh then joined MAREA on 1 Feb 2021.
As part of the Malaysian exchange, Ms Michelle Woon, Nestle and Mr Lee Lih Shyan, Petaling Jaya City Council shared about Nestle Kerbside Collection experience in Ara Damansara and Bandar Sri Damansara.
